[For the Love of ‘Fee] Moonbean Heaven Roast Whole Bean Coffee

‘For the Love of ‘Fee’ is one coffee-lover’s attempt to machete through the tangle of coffee beans and brews to find an awesome cup of coffee. Juan Valdez follows ME! 🙂

Do I have a surprise for you all!

I didn’t buy this coffee – it actually came in the mail from friend, fellow reader, and charter member of the Cupface Crew, Aaron from KeepsMeAlive! He and Mike stopped into Moonbean Coffee Company while on their third annual “Record Store Excursion” in Toronto, Ontario. Aaron emailed me upon his return to say he had something for me and voilà, the gift of coffee arrived in the mail this past Friday! A total surprise to me, and complete Cool Beans! WOOHOO!

Deets

I used my Cuisinart burr mill on medium coarse setting to grind the beans. I percolated the ground coffee using a Hamilton Beach percolator and cold water from the tap.

Description

There isn’t much to report about the packaging of this coffee… the beans came whole in a paper bag with Moonbean’s logo on it. Aaron had written what looked like “Haven” on it. Later, he relayed that the coffee was in fact “Heaven Roast”. I will say this: the box the coffee was mailed in smelled awesome. So awesome, in fact, I thought for sure the Canada Post guys would have torn it apart to get to the beans inside. When I opened the coffee bean bag this morning, I was immediately hit with the aroma of COFFEE. No Pepe LePew, no burnt. Just divine java.

I have very little intel on Moonbean Coffee Company, except it’s in Kensington Market in Toronto…I am not even sure I have ever been to Kensington Market! I wish now I had more information on these beans to share with you all. Moonbean’s website, unfortunately, is moldy…no update since 2012! Too bad.

First Impressions

Opening the bag, I couldn’t help but notice these beans don’t look burnt. Upon grinding them, the familiar and pleasant scent of coffee filled my kitchen, and continued whilst percolating.

Now to taste this coffee! C’mon! Brew faster!

How It Smells and Tastes

Calling this coffee “Heaven” is no misnomer. I have already covered the odour of this coffee, but allow me to hit it home once more…let me just say that after three cups of coffee, my husband and I went outside to rake leaves on our property. When we came back inside two hours later, the smell of Heaven coffee was still in the house, and almost inspired us to brew another pot. Yup, if God brewed a cuppa, this coffee would be his jam. I could go on…

The taste? Incredible! The coffee has a velvety flavour that tastes good going down. Robust but not overly strong. Just a very fragrant and tasty cup o’ brew. I could definitely see myself drinking this coffee regularly.

Worth the Price?

Well, haha, I didn’t pay for the beans, but if I ever get to Kensington Market, I plan to check out Moonbean Coffee Company for more of their Heaven Roast! Thanks again, Aaron!

10/10

  1. Daaaaamn! Looks like I shoulda got you a pound, not a half! 😉

I’m so glad you enjoyed this. Moonbean is just an awesome coffee shop. I was introduced to it by my lovely wife (she used to live just north of it, in the Annex, and went there all the time as a student). I have never, ever had a bad cup of coffee from there. In fact, I’ve never even had a mediocre cup of coffee from there.

Interesting to note, on our annual record shopping excursion, I always drag Mike there so I can buy coffee for my lovely wife – we don’t get to the city often and it’s a nice treat for her when I bring home fresh beans. That bag I mailed you? Chances are it had been fresh roasted not long before I bought it, so given the mailing time… you wouldn’t have gotten it fresher unless you went there yourself to get it. That will probably have had a lot to do with the flavour.

The bag it comes in is all you get, when you buy it in th eshop. You just hold the bag under the big vat o’ beans of your chosen coffee, weigh it yourself, and pay for it. There are pens there for marking what type, which is the only reason I was able to messily mark the bag! 😉

Interestingly, the one I bought for my lovely wife this time was called Devil’s Brew (she likes darker coffee), so there seems to be a real heaven and hell theme going on here…

I also laughed heartily at the thought of you and your husband out there raking leaves all hepped up on three cups of coffee… the fastest leaf-rakers ever! You might’ve concerned your neighbours…

10/10 is a lofty rating, and one I’m glad you can give it. Right on! I think maybe you now have a reason to go into the city more often. If for nothing else, you can buy real coffee!!! 🙂 [and NB. Sarca’s hubby… now you know what to get her for Christmas! 😉 ]

I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!! GIVE ‘ER!!!!

    1. Well, I am no real coffee connoisseur, nor snob for that matter (really!). I just know what I like and this was as close to the ideal as I could get yet. That divine smell and a taste that matches!

  2. Of course my mother does the grocery shopping, but I’ll give it a shout-out. But, I’m sure it’s highly unlikely we’ll find that in our neck of the woods. 😦

      1. Hooray! Well, you’ll just have to get downtown and get some more. Sadly, I won’t be back to the city before winter (or during), I don’t think. Never know, but it’s unlikey. Besides, you’re a whole lot closer than we are! Give ‘er!

    1. I mean to, but it’s a Lapaininmyazza to navigate Taranna. I don’t live or work anywhere down there, so making a trip is a day trip for me. But, it’s definitely on the to-do list!

            1. My MIL goes there to a rhumatologist every six months. Stays at a hotel down there, but gets a Northern tax credit, so it gets covered. None of that for us So.Ontarians!

            2. He loves that shit. I mean this with the greatest love in the world (and I know he’ll read this later so I hope he understands what I really mean) — he is crazy!!

He loves driving to Toronto! He loves winter! The man is awesome, and also crazy, and I wouldn’t change him a bit!

            3. Neither would I! I was grateful to have him send me coffee in the mail, without provocation. He hardly knew me then, either! Aaron’s a great dude! 🙂

            4. D’awwwwwwwwww… thanks guys!

I’m just getting this now. I spent all day prepping for and then entertaining 10 kids under the age of 6 in our house for our son’s 6th birthday today. My folks stayed until almost 8pm, so I wasn’t onlin at all today. To say we’re a little baked is possibly understatement of the year!

Nice to come on here and feel the love haha. And not to worry Mike, I love winter enough for all the rest of you wusses, I don’t mind driving in Toronto (I know the secret to it), and I won’t stop givin’ ‘er until someday I just fall over. As for the crazy, I’ve got it covered – my lovely wife’s a therapist. I AM SO WELL-ADJUSTED Hahahahaaaaa
